09-15 Sep. 2024

Tunisian craftsmanship is an invaluable intangible heritage, embodying centuries of tradition and expertise passed down from generation to generation. It is a true pillar of Tunisian cultural identity and plays a crucial role in the country's economic and social development. Tunisia boasts numerous artisanal skills renowned worldwide. These ancestral techniques, carefully and passionately maintained, contribute to the country's reputation as a center of high-quality artisanal production. Tunisian artisanal products are prized not only for their beauty and authenticity but also for the history and craftsmanship they represent. From textiles to pottery, jewelry, and rugs, each piece reflects a unique and precious cultural heritage. Craftsmanship is one of the most flourishing economic sectors in Tunisia, as evidenced by the export revenues of Tunisian artisanal products reaching over 40 million euros in 2022. It is an important sector for the country, providing over 7,000 direct jobs and contributing 4.5% to the GDP. This economic dynamism reflects not only the quality of artisanal creations but also the ability of the 300,000 artisans in the country to innovate and adapt to international markets while preserving their traditional techniques. The ArtiCréa fair offers professionals from around the world an exceptional showcase of Tunisian craftsmanship. This event highlights the diversity of Tunisian products that blend artisanal skills with creative richness, allowing buyers, distributors, and craft enthusiasts worldwide to connect with numerous artisanal businesses. ArtiCréa thus embodies the values of the National Office of Handicrafts, whose mission is to promote and enhance Tunisian craftsmanship so that this cultural and creative wealth continues to shine around the world.

WHO ARE WE?

The National Office of Tunisian Handicrafts is a public, non-administrative company under the Ministry of Tourism, established by law no. 133 on October 14, 1959.

ONAT aims to bring together various actors in the sector through a major event to revitalize their activities and support local creative talents. Thus, a space has been reserved for young promoters to offer them more visibility and introduce them to the general public. In the "Creation" space, contemporary designers representing different governorates showcased their latest innovations, which are both original and surprising, while being inspired by millennia-old know-how. ONAT also organized various competitions as part of this 39th edition to reward the skills of Tunisian designers. In this regard, the organization of the wood sculpture olympiad aimed to reward the best artisans and to rediscover the craft through the establishment of an "inspiration" space.
Unveiling new creations or highlighting ancestral know-how, wonder, as well as nostalgia, were present in the stands of the 1200 exhibitors..

VALUES

We value craftsmanship as a pillar of our national identity and a driver of sustainable development. It allows each individual to build their future in line with their abilities while preserving and enriching our cultural heritage. Tunisian craftsmanship is more than an economic activity; it is a true symbol of our values of tradition, quality, and diversity

Tunisia is undoubtedly the country of craftsmanship par excellence. This sector, one of the most dynamic in our economy, is deeply rooted in our history and culture. Our professional artisanal activities, among the oldest and most widespread throughout the country, reflect the values of tradition, expertise, and creativity

Craftsmanship in Tunisia generates 300,000 jobsrepresenting 4% of our GDP and about 2.5% of our national exports. With 11% of the active population involved in this sector, of which 85% are women, craftsmanship embodies community engagement and equal opportunities. Each year, this sector creates 5,000 new jobs, thus providing future prospects and personal development opportunities for our citizens.

Tunisian craftsmanship is the artistic expression of our rich traditions and culture. Our country, influenced by numerous successive civilizations, has successfully integrated the skills of various traditions and cultures, creating a rich and diverse craftsmanship that harmoniously blends African, Eastern, and Western influences.
