Details About the Exhibitor

  • The women potters of Sejnane have been perpetuating ancestral techniques passed down from mother to daughter for at least 6,000 years. Thanks to their unique know-how, they produce pottery items that are both decorative and functional, admired for their beauty and exceptional artisanal quality. Because strength lies in unity, a pioneering social and solidarity-based economic structure named Sejnania was created on November 28, 2012, by and with the women potters of Sejnane. Its main objectives are to strengthen the economic empowerment of the women of Sejnane, preserve and promote local heritage (Sejnane pottery), contribute to the local development of the area for sustainable growth, and expand into international markets. This cultural and creative industry currently includes 100 Sejnania potters. On November 28, 2018, the thirteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage inscribed the know-how related to the pottery of the women potters of Sejnane on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
